Summary: Tabbing Doesn't show and work correctly.

Initial Comment:
With version4.2 final of jedit tabbing doesn't show and
work correctly. Normally this wouldn't be a problem,
but I am programming in Python that expects indentions
to be spaced uniformally. I have tried soft tabbing
(spaces) but this doesn't help. Other editors vi,
emacs, NotePad++ show the tabbing correctly, but jedit
doesn't. Please help I really like jedit, but can't use
if for Python because of this.

Thanks for the suggestion to use the whitespace plugin. The
whitespace plugin was helpful in troubleshooting the
problem. I was able to fix the tabbing issues using the plugin.

Sure enough, both actions end up calling
TextArea.insertTab(), which checks whether the buffer is
using soft tabs and inserts spaces in that case.

To insert a real tab, the "Insert TAB" action would have to be:

textArea.replaceSelection("\t");

To use that now, you can place that in a macro and bind that
macro to some shortcut (which could just be TAB).

I tried the "Insert TAB" action instead of the default
"Insert TAB and indent", and with soft tabs on, it inserts
spaces instead of a tab character.

That looks a little bit unintuitive; I wonder if someone
relies on that, though. I'll take a look at the code to see
what it's really doing.

Those are actions which you can find if you go to GLOBAL
OPTIONS - SHORTCUTS - and select Built-in commands from the
combobox.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll try the WhiteSpace plugin, but I cant find the setting for "insert tab"
and "insert tab indent" within jedit. Can you please provide the location within in the app where those settings
are like From tools menu click, Utilities->Global Options->Where at?

Thanks
Scott

there is "insert tab" and "insert tab and indent". Which one
do you have your TAB key bound to? Try the other one and see
if it works better.

Also, try the WhiteSpace plugin which helps you see/change
some of your whitespace options.
